BALBOA PARK

BALBOA PARK

For visitors and residents of San Diego alike, Balboa Park is a travel destination which suits all age groups. I think it’s safe to say that this park can be labeled as the “Central Park” of San Diego, simply because of it’s size and the types of activities to do here.

Balboa Park is located near downtown, right across the Interstate 5 freeway. The park is home to San Diego’s museums, The San Diego Zoo, multiple dog parks, recreational areas, as well as the San Diego Velodrome (for all you fixed gear cyclists).

My girlfriend and I usually come to walk our dog here, but we always find something new to do when we visit.

THE GIRL IN YELLOW

This park is rich in history, housing mission style buildings which are iconic to to the topography and people who pass by. The fountain, which is located at the end of the promenade, reminds me of something outta Sesame Street because anyone is permitted to hop right in and play in the water. I remember that I would always see fountains like this on the show, but never saw one in person. I always wanted to jump in a fountain like this, but I refrained from doing so, and pushed my puppy in instead.

BALBOA BOTANICALS

The botanical garden here is spectacular, and houses plants which are not native to Southern California’s climate. If you go in, make sure to find the plant that closes its leaves when you touch it.

The giant outdoor organ plays at 2pm on Sundays.

You may not notice it at first, if it is your first time visiting, but the 163 freeway passes right through the park. It’s a very scenic stretch which leads you into downtown.

A MAN AND HIS SAXOPHONE
If there’s something to be said about this park, I would have to say that it is very affordable to see. With exception to specific museum exhibits, and the zoo, Balboa park is completely free of charge. Come by to come chill, relax, and learn something new. Don’t forget your camera.
